Transition Season

hogs-bottom-hampersThe heady, still days of summer are drawing to a close as we race towards autumn. The days are slowly beginning to shorten and after the recent hot weather, the air is cooling. Make the most of the remaining summer days with our list of activities to get you outdoors and prepare for the autumn.

Try Forest Bathing

Forest bathing is a meditation and relaxation technique originating from Japan, that improves mental wellbeing. Sound overwhelming? It’s simple! Settle yourself in nature, take deep breaths and focus on your surroundings. What can you see, hear, feel?

You don’t have to go to a forest to reap the benefits of forest bathing. Pop to the park, or even do it in your garden. SImply take the time to feel the sun of your skin and the wind in your hair.

Top Tip: Put your phone on silent to minimise distraction and spend some time focusing on every sense.

Go Foraging

The changing season is the perfect time to go foraging. Gather berries, fruits and herbs in your local forest, park and more. Why not make your findings into a delicious meal, tart or jam? We were inspired to start Hogs Bottom after using the fruits found at the bottom of our garden!

There are a few rules to consider when foraging, including what you can pick, where and when. Check out our blog on foraging for everything you need to know. Find it here.

Gather Flowers

While spring and summer aren’t strictly the domain of flowers, many will be blowing over around now due to the intense heat and lack of rain. Before they disappear, gather some into small posies and place them in bedrooms, bathrooms and on tables. Beautiful, bright and fragrant.

To extend that summer feeling, why not press some of the flowers that you’ve picked? They make lovely keepsakes, and can even be used in crafts to give in gifts or decorate the home.

Have A Picnic

Picnics are a Great British pastime when the summer comes around. From three course meals to slapdash snacks shoved into bags, picnics are a great way to meet up with friends and family, and spend a few hours watching the world go by while tucking into good food.

Check out our blog for ideas on how to plan the perfect summer picnic here. Don’t want to faff with the food? We have a range of cream tea hampers designed to help you out! Got the food but want to spruce up the sides? Try our delicious jams and chutneys.

Late Summer Camping

Sweltering nights and wet days spent in a field are the opposite of a good time. That’s why late summer is the best time to pack a tent and go on some adventures! The summer rush of people is winding down and the weather is mild. The rainy season is on holiday, and the sun gives off a comfortable warmth. Perfect for some alone time in the wild.

Why not combine with…

Sitting Around The Bonfire

Not only does a bonfire keep the bugs at bay, but they are great for a low evening swapping stories, sharing drinks and toasting marshmallows. What’s more, they are an equally summery and autumnal activity. Relax late into the night as the sun goes down, or huddle up around the flames after a crisp day.

Prepare For The Harvest Festival

The harvest festival occurs just before the autumn equinox. Traditionally, a feast is held with crops, bread, preserves and more to celebrate the year’s good harvest.

Why not practice your breadmaking, buy your preserves and prepare your place settings for a cosy feast with friends to truly say goodbye to summer and hello to autumn?
